Energy UK launches ancillary services report

In a new report published today, Energy UK sets out its recommendations on how to ensure the future ancillary services market delivers stability to the electricity system at the least cost to consumers.

Lawrence Slade, chief executive of Energy UK, said:

“Our new report highlights the need for the current ancillary services framework to be reviewed and reformed to ensure it is simple, more efficient and reflects the current and future energy mix.

“This as an opportunity for all industry to work together to develop new, more efficient and economical solutions to balance the network at least cost to consumers while enabling existing and new technology to drive innovation within the sector.”

  • Ancillary services are services and functions provided by the System Operator (SO) that facilitate and support the continuous flow of electricity so that supply will continually meet demand. The term ancillary services is used to refer to a variety of operations beyond generation and transmission that are required to maintain grid stability and security.
