Energy UK comments on the start of the negotiations on exiting the EU

Commenting on the start of the negotiations on the terms of the exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union, Energy UK  issued the following statement.

Lawrence Slade, chief executive of Energy UK said:

“Maintaining our close trading relationship with Europe would be the best deal for UK energy customers and the wider sector. As these crucial negotiations begin, we will work with the government to ensure the continuing affordability and sustainability of the UK’s energy supply.

“To deliver a smooth transition to a decarbonised energy system, we believe the UK should remain in the EU Emissions Trading System at least until the completion of Phase III, which expires at the end of 2020.  Exiting before this would be a complex and costly process for both UK and EU businesses.  Energy UK would like to see agreement on the UK’s continuing participation by October 2017, to allow time for the necessary transitional measures to be put in place.”
