Angela Knight has been appointed Chief Executive of Energy UK, the new trade association for the energy sector.  She will take up the post later in the summer after stepping down as Chief Executive of the British Bankers' Association (BBA) at the end of July.

Energy UK was formed in April, bringing together a wide-ranging coalition of interests. It represents some 70 companies in the sector, from small electricity generators and energy services companies to large vertically-integrated utilities.

David Porter, Acting Chief Executive of Energy UK, postponed his retirement to lead the recruitment of his successor, and will now step down after the summer. Announcing her appointment, he said: "We are delighted to have someone of Angela's calibre joining us to take the helm at the new association. Her talent, drive and experience make her perfectly placed to lead Energy UK into a new era. Angela will bring a vast amount of wisdom and insight from her time in politics and business."

Angela Knight said: "I am very excited to be taking on this new role. Like financial services, energy plays a vital role in the social and economic fabric of our society and we need new and established companies in the sector to thrive and prosper in the UK's competitive market, creating jobs and serving their customers well.

"I want to see Energy UK help deliver investor confidence in the UK and to work with the industry to improve its reputation.  We have to acknowledge companies don't always get things right, but we also need to ensure that what they do well is not overlooked.

"I will be listening carefully to stakeholders to ensure that together we pursue what public policy demands and customers expect. I also look forward to working with the Board and Energy UK's staff to move into the next phase of its development."

Angela leaves the BBA in July, after 5 years as Chief Executive. She joined there from the Association of Private Client Investment Managers and Stockbrokers, where she was Chief Executive for 9 years. She was honoured with a CBE for services to the financial services industry in 2007.

Her business career followed a successful career in politics. She was Economic Secretary to the Treasury from 1995-1997, after being Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Rt Hon Kenneth Clarke MP, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and before that to Industry Minister Sir Tim Sainsbury MP. She was MP for Erewash from 1992 - 1997. She graduated from Bristol University with a degree in chemistry and worked at Air Products before jointly setting up and running the company Cook & Knight Ltd for 6 years.
