As we all know, Brussels is the hub of European policy. To make sure energy was part of the action, Energy UK hosted its second annual reception in the European capital. Energy UK welcomed its members, stakeholders and key representatives from European institutions.
A great evening of networking was topped off with some insightful speeches from the Director General of DG Energy Dominique Ristori and Theresa Griffin MEP. Mr Ristori highlighted the good relationship and positive engagement the UK has with the EU on energy issues and commended the decision to push ahead with the roll out of smart meters. Mrs Griffin gave the view from the Parliament and concentrated on the consumer side of the energy trilemma discussing affordability issues as well as the crucial role of energy efficiency. The event provided an excellent occasion to highlight the work Energy UK does in the EU and at home. As it was Sustainability Energy Week in Brussels, we also worked with DeHavilland to produce an overview paper on Energy Union, with us providing the industry position on Energy Union priorities and discusses the significance of the whole initiative.
Our interaction continued the following day with Energy UK members meeting a number of representatives from the European Commission to discuss the future for EU energy policy. Discussions focused on the Commission’s proposals for an Energy Union with the delegation receiving presentations on issues such as market design, renewables policy and network codes.
