Energy UK comments on uSwitch analysis of household bills

In response to uSwitch analysis of household bills, Energy UK said:

Capacity Market Auction Launched

Moves to ensure British energy customers have electricity any time they need it come a step closer with the launch of Capacity Market Auction. The Auction, run by National Grid, will incentivise investment into an adequate amount of existing and new power generation at the lowest cost to consumers.

Millions of customers switch in the last twelve months

3.3 million electricity customers have changed supplier in the last twelve months since Energy UK started publishing the monthly switching report. The last year has also seen around 1.3 million customers move from a large supplier to a small one. The total number of electricity switches remained consistent with the previous twelve months. However for the same period, the percentage of people moving from a large supplier to a small one doubled from 19 per cent to 41 per cent.

Switching surges as customers prepare for winter

The number of customers changing electricity supplier increased dramatically in October with 345,000 moving to a new deal. This represents an increase of 33 per cent compared to the previous month and is the highest level of switching of 2014 so far. The number of people switching to small suppliers has also increased with 138,000 people moving from a large supplier to a small one. This is the highest number of net switches since records began. The numbers are released at the same time that new research from Ipsos MORI shows that 74 per cent of people who have tried to switch supplier in the last 12 months found it easy.

Energy suppliers are resolving problems with faulty gas meters

Energy suppliers are contacting some customers with gas pre-payment meters to give them a refund as their pre-payment meter may not have been working properly. No one needs to do anything – suppliers know who is affected and have a solution. They will be in touch with each meter customer and, if they are owed any money as a result of this issue, it will be refunded in full as quickly as possible.

Energy UK publishes ‘Consumer Experiences of the Energy Market – Wave 2’

Bill payers are finding energy suppliers both easier to deal with and more trustworthy, new research undertaken by Ipsos MORI reveals. The research shows that 74 per cent of bill payers who have switched or tried to switch their supplier in the last 12 months, found the process of switching easy, and that 79 per cent of bill payers find it easy to make a bill payment. In terms of their experience overall, the proportion of bill payers who find it easy to deal with their supplier has increased by four percentage points to 63 per cent.

Energy UK announces new Chairman and interim Chief Executive

Sir David Arculus is to be the next chairman of Energy UK, the trade association representing the UK's energy sector. Sir David will succeed Lord Spicer when he retires at the Energy UK AGM on 9 December 2014. The Board of the association also confirmed that current Chief Operating Officer Lawrence Slade will take over day to day operational running of the trade body as interim chief executive succeeding Angela Knight who is leaving at the end of December. Both posts will be effective from 1 January 2015.
