Energy UK responds to Eurelectric assessment of taxes and levies on energy bills

The UK has some of the lowest overall electricity and gas prices in the EU, but British customers face substantial policy costs as part of their bill. According to the Eurelectric report, the UK is one of the small minority of countries in the EU where the Government policy costs that customers pay through their bills are higher than taxes they collect.

In other EU countries these policy costs are collected directly through the taxation system. This makes sure that the cost of programmes tackling social and environmental challenges are spread more equally. In recent years levies and tax on energy bills have increased across the whole of Europe.

Angela Knight, Chief Executive of Energy UK said:

“This report is the first to clearly identify the impact that government policies have on the electricity prices that UK customers pay. The report also shows what this means in a European context. We believe there needs to be an honest debate about energy policy including what makes up the typical bill so that customers know what they pay for and why.”
