It’s the Meter that Matters says Knight
Accurate meter readings are key to keeping control of your energy use and finding the best deal for you, Energy UK said today. Chief executive Angela Knight said that a regular meter check should be at the top of everyone’s to-do list. Knight said customers need to understand the importance of sending accurate information to their energy company, as bills and energy deals are based on gas and electricity used. Energy companies will send estimated bills if they have no recent meter readings and this could mean customers paying more or less than is necessary.
Here’s what you need to know:
- There are various types of meters - including electronic meters, dial meters and digital meters.
- You should submit your meter reading every three to six months by phone, online through your supplier’s website or by post.
- Energy companies are required to send out an engineer to read your meter at least once every two years.
- Do contact your supplier if you are having trouble submitting a reading, they will be happy to help.
- All vulnerable customers who may not be able to read their own meters, such as pensioners, those with disabilities and the chronically ill, should contact their suppliers who will be able to arrange free quarterly meter readings.
- Between 2015 and 2020 energy companies will be installing smart meters in everyone’s homes meaning companies have real-time information about how much energy is being, so that customers will no longer have to submit readings.
Energy UK’s chief executive, Angela Knight said:
“Reading your meter should be part of your household routine and is key to getting billing right. When you adjust your clocks twice a year, remember to read your meter. The smart meter rollout, which everyone will get by 2019 will bring an end to estimated bills, but for now, customers must remember to read their meter and it is simple to do.”
