Energy UK comment on Smart Meters
“Smart meters are able to collect more data than regular meters, this data will be made available to the customer via their In Home Display, which will help customers to better understand their energy consumption within the home. It is important to note smart meter data is not real-time monitoring of energy usage and therefore it cannot be used to see when customers are having a shower or have put on a load of washing.
“Customers are able to opt in to enable half hourly data to be sent to their energy supplier instead of daily updates, which will enable them to receive targeted energy efficiency advice and, in time, more tailored tariffs such as Time of Use tariffs.
“The data collected through smart meters is owned by the customer and can only be shared with third parties with the permission from the customer. Energy suppliers are obliged to encrypt this data and ensure the systems are secure.”
