2015 record high for switching
December 2015 saw 338,253 electricity switches, which is above average for the year.
The latest electricity switching data also shows a net gain of 100,904 for small and mid-tier suppliers, which is around 30 per cent of all switches for the month.
Lawrence Slade, chief executive of Energy UK, said:
“2015 was another successful year for switching, with over 3.8 million switching to new providers beating both 2013 and 2014.
“Industry and government have made strides towards making switching simpler and quicker. Customers have become more engaged in switching and are shopping around to find the best deal for them.”
In response, Amber Rudd, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, said:
“Switching is the best way you can take control of your energy bill and make sure you’re getting the best deal.
“Government has provided more choice in the energy market and there are now 34 energy suppliers to choose from, which is significantly more than in 2010. On average people can save £200 by switching so I urge anyone who hasn’t switched to do it today.”
