Energy UK's statement on prepayment meters

Following Luciana Berger MP's news release on prepayment meters, Energy UK issued a statement.

Lawrence Slade, chief executive of Energy UK, said:

“While around sixteen per cent of consumers pay for their energy using a prepayment meter, they can still shop around to find the best deal for them. There are a number of prepayment tariffs on offer and consumers can save up to £200 by switching to the cheapest prepayment deal.

“It costs energy suppliers more to serve prepayment meter customers as the infrastructure costs more to run. Direct Debit offers the cheapest way to pay for energy, as it does for mobile phones and many other products.

“The Smart Pay as you Go roll-out will make things cheaper and easier for prepayment customers.”
