Energy UK responds to PM's speech at Zero Emission Vehicle Summit
Responding to the Prime Minister’s speech at the Zero Emission Vehicle Summit in Birmingham earlier today, Energy UK’s chief executive Lawrence Slade said:
“It’s good that the Prime Minister has listened to our calls for greater ambition and recognises the enormous opportunities offered by electric vehicles (EVs), which are vital to meeting our emissions reduction targets and will help slash harmful levels of air pollution in our town and cities - as well as allowing us to reap the economic benefits from being a world-leader in developing technology and infrastructure. Consumers could also benefit from the ability to store and supply electricity, which would have a transformative effect on our energy system.
“The energy industry is already showing leadership by working together with other sectors on issues vital for a successful roll-out and we have recently launched an electric vehicle charging forum.
“The aspiration to be a world-leader in developing EVs and low emissions vehicles is even more reason for the Government to show greater ambition with its targets for the rollout – and this week we’ve again urged the government to go further and faster. With the performance of EVs improving – and their costs falling – it’s essential that we keep pace with fast-growing consumer demand and take full advantage of the widespread momentum behind the EV rollout.”
