Energy UK responds to the Government's first UK carbon capture project announcement

Responding to the Government’s announcement today on its plans to develop the UK’s first Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) project, Energy UK’s chief executive Lawrence Slade said:

“Our 'Energy and the environment' ten-point action plan, published this week to mark the Climate Change Act's tenth anniversary, stresses our support for Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) so the Government's plans to develop the first full-scale scheme in the UK are good news.  Energy UK is a member of the CCUS council and our members are already deploying pilot schemes.

“Carbon capture has a critical role to play in decarbonising sectors where there are few cost-effective alternatives such as industrial processes, shipping, haulage and heating. Together with sustainably-sourced biomass, it can also create carbon negative power - which could be essential to meeting our climate change targets - and provide a source of firm and flexible generation.  And - as the example of offshore wind shows - becoming a world leader in new technologies like this can bring economic benefits to the UK through jobs, investment and exports.”
