Switching rebound continues in April

Energy UK’s latest monthly electricity switching figures show 657,000 customers moved to a new supplier in April – the second highest number recorded in a month by Energy UK.

The figure represents a significant increase of 39% compared with April 2020, when 472,000 customers switched supplier.

So far in 2021, over 2.1 million customers have moved to a new supplier, up by 3% compared with this time last year and slightly ahead of switching levels in 2019 when a record 6.4 million customers switched supplier.

Emma Pinchbeck, Energy UK’s chief executive said:

“It’s encouraging to see switching go from strength to strength, particularly after the big increase we saw last month, and even overtake pre-pandemic levels.

“Shopping around to see what’s on offer from your own supplier or on the wider market can help save hundreds of pounds – important as we come out of lockdown and see other costs, like transport and leisure, increase.

“Those looking for a speedy, simple and safe switch can check if their new supplier is signed up to the Energy Switch Guarantee for added peace of mind.”

  • From December 2020, larger suppliers in the market are British Gas, Bulb, EDF Energy, E.ON (including npower), Octopus Energy, OVO (including domestic business of SSE) and Scottish Power. This is based on Ofgem’s revised definition of classifying all suppliers with a market share of 5% or above in either fuel as larger.
