Responding to the Government’s coal phase out announcement, Energy UK’s chief executive, Emma Pinchbeck said:
“It’s great to see this widespread and ambitious commitment to phasing out coal power and ending support for new plants.
“Less than a decade ago, more than 40% of the UK’s power was generated by coal – last year it was less than 2%. So the energy sector has shown how quickly you can make the transition from fossil fuels – but we still have to finish the job and last week, Energy UK’s members pledged to invest in and deliver a net zero power system in the 2030s.
“The UK energy sector has led the way in phasing out coal and now we have to help other countries, particularly emerging economies, do the same.”
