Responding to the Government’s Contracts for Difference auction announcement, Energy UK’s chief executive, Emma Pinchbeck said:
“The UK’s flagship Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme has dramatically increased renewable energy capacity while significantly reducing costs and we welcome the Government’s decision to ringfence funding for tidal power in the upcoming auction.
In our report ‘Towards Net Zero Emissions’ we highlighted the need for Government to introduce annual CfD auctions in order to reach the 40GW target for offshore wind and, as this shows, CfDs can also support the expansion of other available low carbon technologies.
We will need to utilise all of these to secure a cost-effective transition and tidal power will play an important role in the UK’s energy mix as we look to decarbonise the power sector.”
