Responding to the Powering Ahead report, published today by the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, Emma Pinchbeck, Energy UK’s Chief Executive said:
“As the report points out, the energy industry has led the way in reducing the UK’s emissions by moving rapidly to low carbon sources of power – but essentially we still have a market designed for an energy system very different from the one that will take us to Net Zero.
“If we are to achieve our climate change goals, we need a fundamental redesign to enable a flexible, net zero energy system, maximising the potential benefits so this transition happens in the most efficient and cost effective way.
“We also strongly agree that the important role of suppliers in supporting customers through the changes Net Zero will involve means a new approach to regulating retail is also required.”
