Shaping the future of energy through early-careers insights

The ‘Meeting the Challenge’ survey captures the views of young energy professionals on their experience of building a career in the UK energy sector. You don’t need to be a YEP member to take part, as long as you worked in energy for fewer than 10 years.

The survey will build on the baseline of last year’s results, which showed nearly 90% of respondents felt the industry had met or exceeded their expectations, with most planning to stay for at least five more years – but they also revealed ongoing barriers, such as unclear career pathways and the perception that opportunities are concentrated in certain regions.

The survey takes just three minutes to complete, and you’ll be entered into a prize draw for a £10 voucher. Complete it before Friday 5 September – and please share it with your network.

Reflections on 2024

It’s been truly inspiring to work alongside such an ambitious group of people over the last few years. Together, in 2024, the SteerCo have put on a colossal 21 events for our members, the 10th annual YEP Awards Ceremony, a stellar survey and report capturing honest reflections of YEPs in the sector and countless initiatives outside of our core base. The Forum has been instrumental in my development as a young energy professional and I’d highly recommend it to any YEP hoping to connect, develop and be inspired by the energy sector.

I’d especially like to thank the Forum’s brilliant Co-Chair, Sandy Kelly, and the YEP Secretariat Lead, Ellie Rowlands. We can’t wait to see what the whole team get up to in 2025!

Being part of the YEP Forum Steering Committee has been a fantastic experience, offering invaluable opportunities to engage with the energy sector beyond my day-to-day role. Hosting an event at a CCGT power station was a particular highlight, providing firsthand insight into large-scale generation while facilitating discussions on the future of energy. Attending networking events has also been incredibly rewarding, allowing me to connect with peers from across the industry, exchange ideas, and gain a broader perspective on the challenges and innovations shaping the sector. These experiences have reinforced the value of collaboration in driving meaningful change!

It was a tremendous privilege to attend the YEP Awards 2024 – a fantastic evening celebrating the success and talent of young professionals driving the transformation of this critical industry for the benefit of our planet and future prosperity.

The opportunity to network with so many like-minded professionals was invaluable, and I am incredibly grateful for it. My key takeaway from the evening was the shared excitement, ambition, and optimism in delivering the energy transition. It was clear that everyone in attendance was united by a common motivation: dedicating their careers to tackling one of humanity’s greatest challenges.

Being a part of the YEP SteerCo was one of the most rewarding experiences I have had over the last 3 years. I have truly enjoyed the site visits – being able to bring young professionals to the operating and maintenance base for Dogger Bank & blade testing facility by ORE catapult felt very purposeful, as well as also seeing my very first offshore wind farm ‘live’ in person in Brighton was a highlight I hold close to my heart! Beyond the site visits, I have really cherished being able to meet so many other Young Energy Professionals across panels, networking events, pub quizzes to name a few. 2024 was a year where we put the most amount of YEP events up, I can’t wait to see what’s next in store for 2025 and beyond!

It was great to get the opportunity to attend the YEP Awards 2023 in November. I was honoured to win the Customer Champion Award for my work on the Demand Flexibility Service, driving active participation from homes and businesses in the energy industry. On the night I really enjoyed hearing about all the different projects across the energy industry that had been driven forward by other nominees and winners.

Young energy professionals are the future of the energy industry, and it is great to see the opportunities and networking that the YEP Forum enables through their events. I was able to meet other like-minded individuals across the industry where we’re all driving forward the energy transition to create a smarter, greener, and affordable future.

I’ve loved being a YEP Forum member over the past few years. It has allowed me to develop personally and professionally, get to know my peers in the industry and be inspired to continue working to deliver Net Zero. I look forward to seeing what 2025 brings for the YEP Forum!
