Responding to the record high of 98.8% zero carbon sources on the transmission network, along with new records for solar generation and low gas use, Energy UK Director of Policy and Advocacy Adam Berman said:
“Our energy system has transformed in the last decade, moving from a grid dominated by fossil fuels to record levels of solar and wind generation that have pushed coal off the system altogether, and gas down to a historic low.
“New records for wind and solar are becoming commonplace as we edge closer to a zero-carbon grid, delivering clean homegrown electricity to homes and businesses across Great Britain.
“Solar is now our cheapest source of power as part of an increasingly diverse generation mix, the result of years of sustained policies designed to deliver clean, secure and stable energy supplies.
“Energy security is more important than it’s ever been, and this record shows that it’s time we push ahead with a just and fair transition to an electrified economy. With an ambitious Government and an attractive investment environment, this transformation is possible.”
Notes to Editors
- Great Britain’s National Energy System Operator (NESO) ran the country’s transmission network at 98.8% zero-carbon between 15:30 and 16:00 on 22 April, surpassing the previous zero-carbon record of 97.7%, set on 1 April 2025.
- Gas also reached an historic low of 1.2% of the energy mix at both the transmission and distribution levels, while solar hit two maximum records on two consecutive days.
