Energy UK responds to the CCC’s progress report

Responding to publication of the Committee on Climate Change’s (CCC) progress report, Energy UK’s Deputy CEO, Dhara Vyas said:

“The UK has made fantastic progress in reducing our emissions by over 50% since 1990. Whilst it’s important to recognise our success, it’s critical we don’t rest on our laurels.

“The simple reality is that decarbonising the remaining half  of our emissions is likely to be much more challenging than the first 50%. The CCC’s report should act as a wake-up call to policymakers. From offshore wind to heat pump installation, the UK isn’t moving fast enough to ensure we reach our carbon budget targets.

“The cost of inaction is clear. The Government spent over £40 billion pounds supporting households during the energy crisis. It proved to be essential but could have been avoided if we’d moved faster on building clean homegrown energy sources and improving the energy efficiency of homes and businesses.

“The new Government has ambitious plans to decarbonise and deliver economic growth.  There is no time to waste when it comes to big decisions like increasing the Contracts for Difference (CfD) AR6 budget to rapidly increase our renewables provision, or rebalancing policy costs to incentivise the electrification of heat. The UK can once again lead by example on the international stage, but rhetoric won’t be enough, immediate action is required.”
