Energy UK responds to the Climate Change Committee’s progress report to Parliament

Responding to the Climate Change Committee’s (CCC) progress report to Parliament, Adam Berman, Director of Policy and Advocacy at Energy UK, said:

“The CCC has highlighted the overwhelming benefits of electrification which will bring cheaper bills, lower emissions, and bolster our energy security. The Government has shown strong ambition in accelerating the decarbonisation of the power sector, which will act as the gateway to the electrification of the whole economy.

To continue this momentum, we need to build on approaches that can deliver.  The continued success of the EV rollout shows that once the Government sets incentives correctly, the market will deliver on cheaper, clean solutions. The private sector is expected to provide around 70% of the investment needed to achieve Net Zero. This relies on our ability to remove roadblocks to progress.

Policy costs, which currently make electricity artificially expensive, remain the largest barrier to realising the benefits of the energy transition. Rebalancing policy costs – whilst tackling risking customer debt and ensuring support reaches those who need it most – could drive down bills for all consumers, and enable a market-led solution to decarbonising the economy at lowest cost.”
