Executive Summary
Energy UK supports the proposed amendment to allow a remote-only option for energy smart appliances within the scope of Measuring Instruments Regulations (MIR).
A remote-only display option better reflects modern consumer preferences, as digital interfaces can provide a user-friendly way for consumers to engage with their energy usage. Remote displays are essential enablers of consumer participation in flexibility services, including demand-side response and smart device optimisation.
Where a device can accurately measure its own energy consumption, it should not be necessary to install an additional asset-level meter to meet display requirements. Removing this constraint helps reduce retrofit costs and allows a broader range of customers, and their devices, to access flexibility services. Alignment with EU Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) requirements would help reduce manufacturing costs, enabling suppliers to offer consumers more affordable, compliant products.
While Energy UK supports the move to remote-only displays, a physical display may still be appropriate for some consumers. Therefore, it should remain an optional manufacturing choice to ensure inclusivity and meet varying user needs.
If you have any questions about this response or wish to engage with Energy UK and its members, we would welcome further engagement.
