Responding to the offshore technologies results of the Government’s Allocation Round 7 auction under the Contract for Difference scheme, Energy UK’s CEO Dhara Vyas said:
“Today’s auction results will deliver critical national infrastructure that will strengthen our energy security and deliver lower bills, as well as provide jobs, investment, and economic growth right across Great Britain.
“It’s more important than ever that we invest in securing our future energy needs to meet the growing demand for power over the coming decades and provide the cheap, plentiful electricity essential to our economic growth. Offshore wind is crucial as part of our growing fleet of wind farms across the country, which reduced wholesale electricity costs by a third last year.1
“Projects that have been delivered through the Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme are powering our homes, businesses and economy, while bringing forward £85 billion of inward investment.
“CfDs provide the certainty and support that any developer investing billions of pounds in building and then operating a major energy plant over several decade’s needs. And the auction process, which this year has seen more competition than ever before, ensures that the contracts deliver the best value for billpayers. Recent analysis showed that a strike price of £94/MWh would be cost neutral for customers so this result of £91/MWh underlines how this auction has done just that.” 2

Notes to Editors:
- The strike price of £91/MWh announced for Pot 3 technologies today reflects the current cost of building new capacity and should not be compared with the current wholesale price, which does not reflect future costs. CfD projects provide energy security against the wholesale price spikes seen in in recent years by providing a stable, predictable cost for electricity when the wind farms come online.
