20 years of delivering on the industry’s biggest challenges
Engage Consulting might be a new member of Energy UK, but our history of collaboration on energy market issues with a high customer impact spans two decades. Lead Consultant Haz Elmamoun looks back on at the major industry milestones Engage jointly delivered with Energy UK on behalf of the industry and its customers.
A relationship built on expertise and shared values
In 2025, as Engage Consulting celebrated our 25th year in business, we became an Associate Member of Energy UK. As the sector’s largest trade association, representing companies that deliver nearly 80% of the UK’s power generation and over 95% of energy supply, Energy UK shares our vision: a sustainable energy sector providing excellent services while powering towards the clean energy transition.
Together, we’re helping the energy sector deliver better services, smarter systems, and lasting impact.
Being part of major delivery programmes for Energy UK and its members has been a hugely rewarding experience. It has been a pleasure to work with Energy UK in complex environments, delivering value to its members and industry and seeing the positive impacts in driving transformations and successful delivery.
Our 20-year joint roadmap
We have delivered five transformational programmes for Energy UK since 2006. Each programme addressed fundamental challenges in the retail energy market, calling for expertise in navigating complex stakeholder landscapes while consistently delivering solutions that enhance industry capability as well as safeguarding consumer needs.

Customer Switching Programme
We led the industry-wide initiative addressing fundamental switching issues impacting customers’ abilities to easily switch energy suppliers.
Using our subject matter expertise and experience, we established frameworks that put customer choice at the heart of energy markets during this foundational two-year programme.

Green Deal and feed-in tariffs
As the UK reshaped its approach to energy efficiency and renewable energy generation, we led the programmes to implement the changes to these schemes, which encouraged customer adoption of low-carbon tech and other energy efficiency measures.
As part of this, we navigated the complexities of introducing these new mechanisms to encourage domestic improvements and small-scale renewable deployment across the energy industry.

Smart Metering Implementation programme
In one of the most ambitious technological transformations in GB energy history which will affect every customer in the country, we led Energy UK’s multi-year programme from inception through to implementation.
Our work started with developing the fundamental building blocks which allow the system to work across the industry, and progressed to policy development with Government, regulatory framework, technical requirements, device testing and assurance, and the nationwide implementation affecting millions of customers.
We supported the establishment of key delivery partners such as Smart Energy GB, the Alt HAN Company and SMDA, and ensured customers are informed and protected through the code of practice for installation visits (SMICOP).

Market-wide Half Hourly Settlement (MHHS)
We represented large energy suppliers at the MHHS Design Advisory Group in this significant market reform to implement the MHHS to deliver benefits to industry and consumers from more accurate settlement arrangements.
Our work on this supported design review, stakeholder engagement, consensus building, and central programme liaison while maintaining industry cohesion.

Radio Teleswitch (RTS) Taskforce
We continue to lead the work to ensure consumers are protected and avoid disruption to their services as industry phases out this metering system which dates back to the 1980s.
Our focus with Energy UK has been on monitoring customer experience and feedback, encouraging delivery, developing service shutdown strategies, managing industry and consumer group engagement, working with government, and resolving technology barriers to protect consumers.
Beyond major programmes
Our partnership with Energy UK extends well beyond these transformational programmes. For the past three years, we’ve delivered specialist training on Energy Market Arrangements, helping industry participants understand the complex dynamics of market players, investors, and stakeholders.
We’re also the proud sponsors of Energy UK’s Lightning Bolt Talks series and are looking forward to our fourth year of supporting these popular events. The sessions have become essential forums for exploring how data-driven solutions and emerging technologies can better support consumers and accelerate the energy transition.
Supporting the next generation of energy professionals remains equally important to us. This year, our CEO, Matt Johnson, was a judge for the Young Energy Professionals Awards – an event we’ll be supporting again in 2026. We’ll also continue to support key industry events that help create platforms where future leaders connect, learn, and shape tomorrow’s energy landscape.
Looking forward
Our partnership with Energy UK remains driven by shared values and a commitment to supporting the industry’s transition to Net Zero. We remain focused on ensuring consumers are at the forefront of this journey.
Our CEO, Matt Johnson, says: “This milestone in our Energy UK partnership reflects two decades of successful collaboration on the industry’s most critical programmes. As we face the unprecedented challenges of energy transition, our combined expertise and shared values will continue driving meaningful change for consumers and the sector.”
As the UK energy sector faces unprecedented challenges and opportunities, we look forward to continued collaborations with Energy UK that will play a vital role in shaping solutions that benefit both industry and consumers alike.
