Middle East conflict and energy
Events in the Middle East have led to international gas market volatility, which may leave people wondering what it means for energy supply, and energy bills.
How could the situation in the Gulf impact the energy sector?
Energy UK has created a series of briefings that clearly and simply break down what is going on, offering up‑to‑date insight to help households and businesses understand what’s happening, as well as the potential impact on non-domestic energy markets.
These explainers are updated regularly as the situation evolves, so do check back for the latest version.

The impact of the conflict on the July price cap
Ofgem announced the 1 July (Q3) energy price cap on 27 May.
In this update, Energy UK outlines these changes to the cap, which has risen as a result of ongoing volatility in wholesale gas markets.
We also explain Ofgem’s changes to the Typical Domestic Consumption Value (TDCV) – the average figures it uses to communicate how price cap changes affect an annual energy bill.
Why are energy bills so high, and what is the energy sector doing to help?
To support energy customers during the last five years of price instability – and beyond – suppliers offer a wide range of additional support measures to help customers, often going beyond regulatory requirements to identify and assist those who are vulnerable.

A better approach to energy bill support
Global energy markets are destabilising – and UK households could feel the impact. The 2022–23 crisis showed what happens without targeted support: £35bn spent, when a focused approach would have cost £12.5bn. It’s time for the Government to take action.
In ‘A better approach to energy bill support’, Energy UK urges the Government to immediately step up efforts to ensure that any intervention to support customers targets those in greatest need.
Successive governments have recognised the need to target support better but progress on the data-sharing that could enable this has been slow. As we saw during the pandemic and previous energy crisis, the state can move quickly and inject a sense of urgency into work when it is really required.
The UK energy transition: Supporting statistics and evidence
The UK’s transition to clean, affordable and secure energy is already well underway.
Find key statistics and evidence on the factors shaping energy bills, the role of different energy sources, and how the energy system is evolving over time.

How to cut bills: A crisis we can’t afford to ignore
In How to cut bills, Energy UK sets out a roadmap for achieving significant savings on bills for domestic and non-domestic customers over the next five years.

Cutting Business Energy Costs: The case for action
Produced in collaboration with CBI, Cutting Business Energy Costs outlines how high UK energy costs are hurting business competitiveness and calls for a long‑term national strategy to cut bills.
