Equity, diversity and inclusion

There’s never been a more exciting time to work in the energy industry and there are many different opportunities from technical and engineering roles, to policy roles and positions across legal, finance and communications.

As the sector grows it’s essential we continue to develop our existing energy workforce and attract talent so that the industry has the people it needs to meet the challenges of the future.

TIDE – Tackling Inclusion and Diversity in Energy

Energy UK is a founding member of TIDE – Tackling Inclusion and Diversity in Energy – a cross-industry initiative, also supported by Ofgem, ENA and the Energy Institute set up to improve Equity, Diversity and Inclusion across the energy industry.

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Conference

The industry’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Conference has grown from an Energy UK initiative, to a flagship conference covering all aspects of the energy sector. Now in its fourth year we partnered with Ofgem and ENA to bring together senior leaders from across the energy industry to gather insight, share best practice and challenge leaders to improve EDI in energy.

The 2023 conference saw 170 attendees in person, as well as hundreds joining online, with around a fifth of attendees at CEO or UK Country Manager level.

This year’s conference will take place in July – check back here soon for details.

Pride in Energy

The industry’s Pride in Energy network is a diversity forum and network for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBTQ+) members of the energy industry and their allies. The Pride in Energy network was created in response to a need for an organisation to address LGBTQ+ issues in the energy industry. Despite representing 619,000 jobs, five percent of GDP and over two percent of all jobs in the UK the energy industry had fallen behind other equivalent industries in key indices such as the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index.

EDI at Energy UK

As well as industry-wide initiatives to help improve EDI across industry, we also have our own policies in place regarding representation of diverse speakers at our events, and the events we speak at. We practice blind recruitment to ensure we are hiring inclusively and ensure our team undergo regular unconscious bias training as well as offering other related courses to maximise a safe and inclusive working culture.
